Anzac Day

On the 25th of April, Anzac day occurs. Anzac day is to remind us about the courage and the sacrifice the Australian and New Zealand soldiers made at war. ANZAC stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corp and is probably one of Australia’s most important national occasions. The Anzacs fought in gallipoli (in Turkey) and many Australian soldiers were killed.

On Anzac day, which is a public holiday in most parts in Australia and New Zealand, people brings flowers and such to memorials or graves to those soldiers. It is traditional that we turn and face west, to where the sun sets, and have a one-minute silence remembering them or thanking them (in your mind).

lest we forget..

ANZAC Letter

A Letter to Home…

25Th April 1915

To my dear Family.

The invasion to the Turks was impossible from the very beginning; some of our people was killed before they even got out of the boat. If soldiers was ordered to swim to shore, none of us would be shot but we would’ve be having our funerals at the bottom of the ocean due to the heavy load. Many of us would just drown.

The Turkish army is guarding the top of the cliffs and shoots down on us as if they are hunting rabbits. None of us have made it to the tops of the cliffs. We aren’t enough to even be a hindrance to them.

This plan was a gamble; the money was just a lure and a lie, it would probably be impossible to get the money for we would be dead. It was a complete lie saying that the job would be done easily. Back on the boat, I could tell that my dear friend, Jack Simpson, as he preferred to be called, was as nervous as I was. I knew that the guns meant something dangerous.

The sound gun shots are deafening and the smell of the corpses of our soldiers stink is worse than the toilet we had out in the yard. Our soldiers are decreasing, and Jack Simpson, now caled the bravest of the brave, who had saved my life with his donkey countless times, was shot and now lie in the front gates of heaven. He was not only a hero, but my friend aswell.

This may be my last letter for you for I can be shot dead any second on a surprise attack. I send my love for you and I would give anything to be back at my old lifestyle at the peaceful country side again…

C.M Brogins.
